Of those castles, this one is in much better condition than, in particular, Skenfrith. Unlike other castles, which were built for both military purposes and as regal residences, this one existed strictly to hold off potential invaders and marauders. Some internal areas did include a chapel, hall and kitchen. In 1254, Henry III granted this castle (and other \u201cTrilateral\u201d castles) to his eldest son \u2013 the future Edward I.
